Citizens Step In To Help Downtown’s Keeney’s, No Bailouts Required

For my first post, I’m going to keep it positive with what I think is a pretty remarkable story: Patricia Keeney, owner of sporting goods and antiques store, Keeney’s, thought she may have to close its doors when she fell ill, needed hospitalization, and was diagnosed with cancer soon after. Instead, a group of volunteers, coordinated by the Downtown Neighborhood Association, stepped in to man the store while Keeney fights back, allowing the store to continue its 100+ year run.

Janus Theatre presents MacBeth adaptation

Janus Theatre’s version of Macbeth by William Shakespeare, freely adapted and directed by Sean Hargadon, will open November 4 at the Elgin Art Showcase on the eighth floor of the Professional Building and run through November 14.

Elgin ArtSpace will house 55 artists

The ArtSpace project will convert the Henrietta block in downtown Elgin into live/work spaces for 55 artists. Construction begins in the spring of 2011 and the first resident artists are expected to move in in the fall of the following year.
