The Center for Cultural Interchange is bringing a group of French students to Elgin for the very first time! We are looking for host families for this summer, from August 1 to 21. If you want to have a cross cultural experience for you and your family, this is a great opportunity!

Please email Elizabeth at cultureexchange.berent@gmail.com for more information.

Some sad News, an true Elgin Icon passed over the weekend: Ret. Judge Donald T. Anderson has left us…yet his legacy will live on with many organizations, clubs, and people. He was active right up to the end & a good sport to let us honor him at our March “Preserve the Herd” Lords Park Zoo fundraiser. The Judge was a good mentor to many (including me since 2009). Prayers to wife Nancy, his close friends & family helping him stay involved until the end. May he now rest in peace. Official details on memorials and services between 6/9 - 6/10 to be published soon.

I have an issue, and I need to know how to deal with it. I recently moved out of an apartment in Elgin and now the landlord is trying to charge me throught he roof. I need to know if what she is trying to do is extortion. I mean, she is charging me $150 for a master lock. they cost what, a few bucks at most art a hardware store. That’s no t all. She also said to my wife,”I don’t like renting to you type of people.” Meaning, I am an Ottawa Indian but mistook me for hispanic. She even went as far to insult my children. I am hoping someone out there has any insight as to how to handle this person. I am willing to listen to anybody that has something to say on this.

I would call Administer Justice at 1-847-844-1100.

      Web site is administerjustice.org

If your income is low they can probably help you with advice.

Scott, I beleive you have a right to see the original store receipts for any after-move-out repair expenses that the landloard is attributing to you. IF you had a downpayment/deposit before you moved in, it should be deducted from that, but they still need to show you repair bills. the bad news is that if it took a handyman an hour to do and he charged 100/hr… you could get up there real quick. im not sure of the laws about labor costs… demand receipts for both though and dont pay until you do get it all in writing!

As for the discrimination, that really sucks, but as you moved out and were not refused the right to move in or to continue your living there, you dont have much case there. Pretty sure somneone can tell you they dont like you but as long as they dont limit your rights, they are within their rights as bad as that might feel personally, its a good thing you are leaving this situation in the dust. If you wanted to make her life worse, you could always raise your concerns with the ACLU or other action group so they would watch and see if the landlord continues their discrimination to otheres after you.
