Let’s take a ‘time out’

19 June 2010 RS 7 Comments

For those readers who have been involved in the seemingly-endless tiring argument in the recent pit bull thread and the June monthly open thread, please take a time out. I do not want to issue any bans, but if you were in the purgatorium before and continue to be aggressively argumentative I will issue a permanent ban. I don’t want this site to be a forum for personal arguments. We can be civil even when we disagree.

And if you are constantly offended and outraged maybe you should take a general time out and remember the serenity prayer: “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.”

I can guarantee you that one thing you will not change is the mind of the person you are arguing with, and it is unlikely that you are changing any other minds either.

I don’t believe that any of you are dangerous people, but it is unsettling to read references to gun ownership or wishing somebody gets hit by a truck. Even though we know it’s rhetorical or in response to a statement that is equally inappropriate, it’s still wrong. Let’s not wish harm or misfortune to each other. You are all better than that.

If do you feel that you are in danger, you should get in touch with authorities. You can also consider posting comments using a user name rather than your real name. But because of the threaded nature of comments, it would be unfair to people who have replied to comments if I selectively removed your comments. So I cannot honor those requests. I am willing to delete all of the comments in the June open thread and the recent pit bull thread if all of you–as in the people involved in the argument–consent to it. You can do so by posting a comment to this thread.

I have closed comments on the two posts (”June open thread” and “Pit bull attacks boy”) meaning the argument is over. It doesn’t matter who won. If you continue arguing on any other thread, I will close those threads and ban you.

So please please everybody, as the creepy dudes in the 80s would say, take a chill pill.

And don’t forget that Elgin Brewfest is ON today! SATURDAY from 5pm to midnight!

Thank you for posting this RS. I don’t post here often (I think I’ve done so one or two times), but I come here every day for the news and community opinions. It’s sad when what could be a civil debate turns into a volley of vile personal attacks on each other.

I know we can’t “just all get along,” but we can be respectful of each other and of those reading this site.

Thank you again, and I look forward to more from elginite.org

Maybe not allowing political campaigning months ahead of campaign season to take place and stopping the posting of direct links to self-promoting, vulgar Internet sites?

Links to legitimate news sites like the Daily Herald or Courier News news could be allowed. I’ve heard some blogging areas do not allow any links at all.

    Just a thought.

No worries… I suggest the following advice be taken to heart for those who are most interested in pointing out supposed truths and flaws… :)

“Weeds are flowers too, once you get to know them.” - A.A. Milne (via Eeyore) - Winnie-the-Pooh

Thank you Rick for keeping this forum open - it’s an important resource to the community - hopefully more then http://www.BocaJump.com - time will tell (or elections and other pressing city issues one day I guess).

Oh, for sure, she’s running now. Trying to play nice while taking another slap at someone else’s web site, I see. I bet that site won’t allow personal atacks and profanity and I bet it will have more than 25 users, too.

    She just can’t help herself….

Instead, maybe, I should have quoted Raisa Gorbachev, late wife of the former Soviet president, Mikhail Gorbachev who said:

—”Hypocrisy, the lie, is the true SISTER of evil, intolerance and cruelty”—

    Yeah. That’s better.
