I had take-out from Toom Toom Thai this weekend and it was great! I tried the Pad Thai, pot stickers and crab ragoons. All were really yummy. The place looks very nice inside and I’m excited to actually dine-in next time.

I’m a huge fan of Thai food and can’t wait to try it. Right now my favorite Thai place is Thai Town.

  3. klubgal says:

Does anyone know if they have a vegetarian menu? I’ve gone to Thai restaurants with a “vegetarian menu” but the vegetables were cooked in fish or chicken stock or sauce. That’s not vegetarian!

The way I cooked food is not premade, skill, educate and honest are very important. I am very careful when I cooking and different than other place. My concept ” I cooked for my family is mean my customer are my family too. Trust me you will get the one you want. Just is right.*** Toom Wiitanen

I was there last week: spring roll & chicken pad thai. I enjoyed the food, it was fine. For some reason, I thought the spring roll tasted great, though I can’t tell why… almost as if it was more handmade or something than what I have typically come across at similar places. I don’t know, they could all be handmade for all I know, but there was something to it and it was a nice surprise. I also tried the peanut sauce and it was great… like “order it by itself with a spoon” great.

The place looks nice, too… like a fancier version of Akinas.

My family had dinner here last night. It was absolutely wonderful!! Even my 10 year old son, who is not adventurous about food at all, raved over his “build your own soup.” I’m pretty sure I’ll be back here again and again!

  6. Marny says:

Dined in with friends both Saturday and Sunday and have had take-out several times. Loved the Ginger Chicken and plan to order it again. The Pad Thai and veggie rolls were wonderful. One friend ordered the soup and it looked so yummy. A meal in itself. I look forward to trying that next time. You also won’t be disappointed with their Thai iced tea.

They have a classy dining room and prices are very reasonable! Plus servicing portions are perfect. Not too little, not too much. We needed a restaurant like this in downtown Elgin.

In my opinion Bangkok House is far superior to this place. The atmosphere is garish unless you like bright red paint accentuated with super bright lighting and loud rap music. The rice and potatoes were OBVIOUSLY undercooked however the cook refused to even entertain that possibility. Anyway, maybe it was a bad night but I’ll stick with the more traditional and authentic Thai places in town.

    • Ann says:

Don’t be so negative about Toom Toom Thai. I don’t see How Bangkok House is so authentic, obviously it’s mixed with Chinese food. I have had food there before and Toom Toom Thai is the reason for Toom (Chef/owner) to open up in downtown Elgin to educate people to eat and know Thai food better. The restaurant is newly open and accepting all comments and suggestions. Although, it’s unacceptable for anyone who will just make a comment to ruin the place. I know Toom and her family. Seeing what you wrote here is just not right. Since she opened, I have been there 4 times already. There’s no such thing of rap music! Her food is amazing.

“Don’t be so negative about Toom Toom Thai. ”
“Seeing what you wrote here is just not right. ”
“The restaurant is newly open and accepting all comments and suggestions. ”

Evidently not. Say anything you want, just don’t say anything negative!

And speaking of negative, how about The Walnut Speakeasy. The waitress tells me they reserve the right to charge a different price than what’s on the menu and not tell you it’s a different price when you order it. As a business practice you might be able to rip everyone else off but I nailed ya - yet you still do it! No wonder why people are walking out of there without paying. Evidently, the State’s Attorney doesn’t know about this business practice yet! I won’t go back. Douglas Street Sports Bar provides better value, honesty, and integrity.

“I don’t see How Bangkok House is so authentic, obviously it’s mixed with Chinese food” Obviously, Ann you have not been to the Bangkok House and Shanghai Restaurant before. Because if you have and actually talked to the owners or one of their daughters (who are always there) you would know that it states that they are Authentic Thai and Chinese food, and that the family is both Thai and Chinese, that is how their food is authentic. The father (who is Chinese) cooks Chinese food and their mother (who is Thai) cooks Thai food. To top it off, the family goes to Thailand every year and they always bring back with them dried, but HOT, chili peppers and REAL palm sugar that goes into some of their amazing Thai dishes. I have grown up with Bangkok House before they bought the Shanghai Restaurant and it is the best Thai and Chinese food that I have eaten in Elgin since I was 9.
I am just responding to clarify about what you wrote and not being negative to Toom Toom, so please don’t you be negative to Bangkok House and Shanghai Restaurant.

Toom Toom Thai is authentic as it is fun. The happy atmosphere along with the calming music definantly set the mood. I recomend the thai iced tea and the masaman curry, both are personal favorites of mine. LOVE THE GLASS TABLETOPS!

  9. toothache says:

Have not been in yet but I can’t wait!

  10. Christy says:

My girlfriend and I ate there for the first time today. We loved the bright red color that screamed “positive energy” which is exactly what Toom Toom is full of. It sounds like the “critic” above cannot appreciate such a positive environment and I appreciate dining with others like myself. Let her have Bangkok House! The vivid photographs are striking and compliment the lively red color perfectly! I appreciate how Toom takes the extra care necessary in her cooking, educating her customers and meeting each customer whenever possible! The food is authentic, reasonably priced and fresh! You go girl! You’re a wonderful lady-a visionary! Do yo’ thang!

  11. Vijay says:

I had a bad experience at Toom Toom. Maybe it was a bad night but the food was not cooked properly. I don’t make a habit of writing reviews, good or bad but I went there expecting an exceptional meal and what I received was an exceptionally bad meal. I’m sorry my visit wasn’t as “positive” as others have been. On the other hand, the service was quite good.

How much you get pay from Bangkok house? I been there before the place look dirty, people not friendly never smile, food not authentic Thai and lot of MSG, You love that place go that place don’t tried to ruin toom toom thai I love her concept she cooked for every one she take every comment she is new for this area, tell her what you want, both side first time to befair with her too. I and my son sit behind you by that day I order the food I had rice too is cooked you tried to make her down. If you part owner with Bangkok house I feel sory for, her place different than Bangkok house hi class butt lo price and very very friendly. She know how to cooked and I can tell after I ate I not drink much water her food no MSG I will be stick withe her place. I can’t stand you and the white guy walk and check around her dining room like low class dump philipian,(I heard your conversation with Toom , she is very police take every complain from you, the music it not rap music don’t tried to make yourself down more than this your are such low class low educate make dirty business to her. I am new customer too I did’t see anything wrong from her place give her a chance If bother your love place, it can’t help too. Good is good can not compair. Hope you not come back to ruin her place any more I beleive if she read the review she will not happy too. You have a bad day might be from you did not having sex long time that why you tried to point to some one for you emotion it unfair girl.

      • Boxcar says:

This is a classy restaurant and very affordable. It has all the makings of being one of the secretly good places to eat. No evidence of cardboard boxes with pre-cooked food. It’s almost a mnadatory stop if you want to eat downtown. A good “second or third-date” place to go.

    • Jim says:

      Vijay,

How can you say that you don’t make a habit of writing reviews when on every site I see the words “Toom Toom Thai” I also see you raving about “undercooked potatoes” or some other false statement. If you really did have undercooked food, I’m sure if it was mentioned to any of the staff, it would have been fixed/replaced immediatly. I have been eating Toom’s cooking for about a year and a half now (since she worked at Thai Zie) and never once have i been unsatisfied. this is what people in the corprate world call “dirty business”. how much does your resteraunt pay you to say this?

  12. Vatcharapol says:

Toom is a wonderful. The food was nothing less than delightful. In fact, I’ve been craving it all week. It tastes like she made it just for me as if I were her family. I moved here from the city and always loved Duck Walk on Belmont. I don’t miss Duck Walk anymore. I think I’ll go over to visit Toom tonight. Green curry…mmmmmmm….

Ate at the restaurant for the first time this week. The food was the best I have had in the Thai realm. The freshness of the ingredients, the personal attention by the owner, and the great location will keep me coming back.
