Has anyone been following Sunday’s murder? I read the articles and the reader comments and the comments and support of the act are as scary as the crime. This is not a good thing for the reputation of Elgin. I know I took a risk buying property in Elgin but news like this makes me feel like a made a huge mistake. I feel like the thugs have more of an impact on the perception of this city than the positive people trying to improve this city. Anyone else feel like this when they hear these kind of stories?

I used to until I connected to the community and started attending events and making friends and creating ties to the community. I now have realized I have the best neighbors and neighborhood. I’m not blind and nor do I have rose colored glasses. I know there is a gang problem. But in the several years I have been here I have seen far more positive than negative events happen. My guess is had I not connected to the community I would have felt a bit isolated and focused on only negative events and would have considered moving by now. But the truth is I can’t imagine moving. I’m in it for the long haul.

I just read in the Courier that Elgin sewer and water rates are going up 9 percent next year. Now that is hard for myself to take with a properly functioning Elgin sewer that is modern and has the storm water portion separated from the sewer portion.

I am thinking what a slap in the pocket book to Elginites who live in the older parts of the city and perhaps have their sewer back up in their basement when it rains too hard because they don’t have the storm water separated from the sewer portion like the modern sewers do.

If the city was allowing growth all around Elgin including many more acres of ground being paved over so storm water does not have as many places to soak into the ground they should have kept pace with the growth and made it a bigger priority to get more older sewers separated from the storm water.

To raise the sewer rates on these unfortunate residents who do not have a properly working sewer in all weather conditions is a travesty especially if the increased bill comes on a heavy rainy day.

Instead of being able to take time to play a round of golf on Elgin’s newest luxury golf course that we the city so conveniently took off a developer’s hands they will be cleaning up sewage back up.

Instead of being able to go down to where Prairie Rock once was and watch a kick boxing match with incentives to the new business provided by the city if the Mayor’s proposal goes through or maybe has already passed they will be cleaning up sewage while paying 9 percent more for the privilege of cleaning it up.

    It isn’t right.
