CHICAGO - A New York-based home improvement magazine has named a Chicago suburb the best place to find fixer-uppers.

This Old House’s July/August issue puts Elgin on its second annual “Best Old Neighborhoods” rankings. The community also tops the list of 50 U.S. and Canadian neighborhoods that the magazine says have homes that deserve a long-term commitment.

This Old House says it tapped neighborhood groups and real estate agents to find safe, close-knit communities with architectural diversity, well-built homes, and amenities like bike and walking paths.

It says Elgin fits that description best because of its proximity to Chicago, historic homes selling at $100,000 and up, and the city’s grant program to convert multifamily houses back to single-family homes.

    Great news!

It’s articles like like this that can help turn around the negative attitude toward Elgin (by the way, it’s a city, not a suburb).

Hey, everyone, I came from Chicago to Huntley and spend a lot of time shopping and recreating in Elgin and LOVE the small city flavor and how nice the folks are, period!

Elgin is a nice city and has a very diverse community which makes it all the better. I didn’t know what the negative stereotypes were and why it has such reputation…
