Why should you go to today’s ECCO Green Expo, held at ECC (Fox Valley University & Business Center Building) from 10 am to 5 pm? To shop in a handmade market, learn how to compost with worms, listen to a variety of live music, familiarize yourself with over 30 local “green” businesses, hear our mayor speak, provide your kids a fun place to play and learn through the many kids’ events, learn about organic food and native gardens, and much more!
I will be presenting on bicycle planning at 12:30 pm as part of the Transportation panel (room 103). I am honored to share the stage with State Representative Keith Farnham, Regional Transit Authority representation Jessica Anderson, and Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning representative Patricia Berry.
This event is truly a steal. I have been to many similar (some smaller) events that ran between $10 and $50 a head. We are lucky to have an event as large as this put on in Elgin. It is sponsored by ECCO, the Elgin Climate Change Organization, with the help of many volunteers from this year’s Elgin Area Leadership Academy class. For more information, check out the ECCO website and the Daily Herald’s coverage of this event.
I hope some Elginite readers are able to attend, and will come back to this post to discuss. I know a few commenters have been critical of Elgin’s sustainability efforts. An event such as this–extremely large and put on without City funds–shows there is definitely resident demand for sustainability planning, and displays the massive amount of grassroots and volunteer efforts involved in Elgin’s sustainability movement already.

The Expo was a Great success today, SOOO many people touring the tables and the rooms of speakers. It was great to see the families there with young learners as well. We meet some wonderful people at the tables, and learned a lot in the Sustainability Plan meeting and the “Eat Local” talks as well. I hope your transportation session was a good success, there was great feedback on the bike-path programs in the Mayor’s session earlier. ;)
Thank you again to Kathleen Haeers with the ECCO for providing myself with table space to bring awareness to including the Lords Park Zoo into the sustainability plan. we had lots of individuals interested in teh Community Garden idea, and lots of good feedback for the city, local groups and supporters of our parks in town.
There’s been significant interest in community gardens for a long time. Hopefully somebody (a neighborhood organization) will do it this year.
