Downtown Elgin Riverfront
Amazon.com had a great deal on the Flip Ultra a couple of weeks ago–it’s actually still a great deal, so I placed an order before I went on vacation, and was glad to see the box waiting for me when I got back.
I don’t have any experience with video, so I just wanted to get started with a small investment–in this case, about $50. If all goes well, I may start putting up videos occasionally so we have a little more variety in the types of content that appear on this blog.
So anyway, after I voted yesterday, I decided to go for a short walk to test out my new toy! The video you see above is the result of that foray.
The song that accompanies the video is called The Park, and it’s by the legendary Elgin punk rock band Slapstick. It’s one of my favorites songs by that group. I hope you enjoy it (hint: turn it up LOUD!).

wish my sound card was working! I am mad that I never made it to the third floor to see a slapstick performance..I wish the gausthaus didnt change their format and try to make it chic. Almost Punk enough was my first Slapstick song that got me hooked!
That’s a good song. I actually like almost every single song on their album.
Where’s the best spot for fishing on the Fox River. And by fishing, I mean catching anything. I’m thinking about taking my kids to try it out sometime soon. They haven’t ever fished.
Hi Mack,
They might have a better time if you take them to Pratt’s Wayne Woods. They’ve got nice channel cats, and more likely than not the kids will catch at least a few bluegills there.
Thanks for the advice.
We did go to Pratt’s Waynes Woods. That’s real nice there on saturday. Didn’t catch anything, but it was nice anyway.
GEE-N-JAY or LIL. Boxcar is definitely not Heaton from afla. He could not write in that informational format if you paid him a Mil. BTW, hows Gil!
whos lil? haha..Tina your a quick one? I am in my 20s and a male. Boxcar-Heaton.
Anyone have an answer to Mack’s question? It’s the only comment related to the post and everyone’s ignoring it.
Mack - I don’t fish and the river looks radioactive near the boat. Maybe the park district can help you out.
Some people fish at the South Elgin dam and others fish at the Kimball Dam. In both cases, people stay near the dams because the water is oxygenated there so the fish congregate. The South Elgin dam is, of course, downriver of Elgin’s sewage :)
Bottom line though is that the Fox River, because of the dams is a degraded river that doesn’t offer good fishing.
I have been coveting a flip for over a year now! But I think when I looked they were more along the lines of $100-150.
I got the 30 minute flip so it was cheaper than the 60 minute one.
GEE-N-Jay,
As you know Boxcar and I went round and round on illegal aliens throughout this election, but we both have agreed to move on! I am embarrassed with my letter to give Boxcar an editorial and everyone including Boxcar said “No”! After gathering my thoughts and really reading what Boxcar was pointing out, it isn’t a racial thing he was voicing; it was the financial and infrastructural safety that he was getting at! We need to worry about what illegal immigrants do to our economies governmental financial support and overcrowding safety of our city!
What we need to do now is voice our opinions on everything at hand and force our new council to listen to US on our views for what would be right for Elgin; ECC’s referendum has past, so let’s make sure we are informed and have a say in what they will do with the money we have given them and who gets the contracts. We need to make sure the city knows how we feel, as a whole community, about a new symphony hall. We need to help Jessica and the others with taking care of our library. We need to discourage the council on unnecessary spending of OUR money on roads and put this funding to good use on streets that really need work and whether salt is wasting our money because of the damage it does, along with odd/even parking for the residents with no off-street parking. Plus, we need to let Mack, Klubgal and other parents know where the best fishing and other possible family outings in our city are, to help in a family’s parental involvement with their kids to ensure that theirs and all kids of our future are off the streets, and have opportunities and values to become good citizens in our city’s future!
WE are called the “United States”, so let’s unite to become what has been the strongest nation in the world! It all starts with just one voice (one city)!
Back in the sixties as a preteen I was an expert carp fisherman right below the South Elgin dam. I would use just a little split shot sinker and wheaties made into a doughball by mixing with water and squeezing most of the water out to form a good dough ball. I then would cast my line a few feet from the bottom of the dam waterfall and pull out one carp after another. I would like to try that Pratt’s Forest Preserve. How do you get there?
My biggest fishing thrill was when I went to the “Cops Lake” in the gravel pits in South Elgin off of Gilbert St. These lakes are no longer there as there is a landfill in it’s place. Such a shame as we use to swim in them and in the winter play hockey under the moonlight with a nice bonfire nearby. We used a can as a puck and one time I got hit smack right between the eyes. The dam had broke so there were sort of like two small lakes there and I caught a 3 and a half pound bass which was the biggest thrill of my fishing life until the day I watched my young teen age son pull out a bass about that size in the ponds off of 176 behind the baseball fields in Crystal Lake. There are some bigger bass that my friends have caught there but it gets very weeded. I can’t remember the name of the baseball park off 176 but just take 47 north to 176 and turn right and it will be about a few miles on your right on 176. There is a golf driving range right next to the baseball diamonds with the ponds behind them. Minnows and artificial worms or artificial lizards worked well in the past.
I remember using Wheaties or corn and pulling those carp out left and right, those were the good old days!

That last one has a map. You just take 25 south out of Elgin, and stay left when it splits into Dunham Road. Take Dunham Road to Stearns Road, and it’s a mile or two up the road on the right. You don’t get much of a warning before that right turn though. It’s a small road, and there’s a farmhouse at the corner.
From the Elgin city center, it’s probably a 10-15 minute drive.
Once you get to the forest preserve, the entrance to the ponds is on the right (the left is for RC planes and dogs).
Great place to fish!
Boxcar (Heaton) has his own BLOG- AFLA’s blog -its just noone goes to it and blogs on there. It says all the exact things that Boxcar says on this blog he just cuts and paste.
