The Elginite Version 4

12 March 2009 RS 11 Comments

Well, after a long night–and why do I even bother to do this in the middle of the night? Oh yeah, I don’t want to inconvenience our millions of users. Anyway, as you might have noticed Version 4 of The Elginite is now available for public consumption.

I didn’t get a chance to test this yet in IE6, so if that’s what you’re using (WHY??), let me know if there are serious problems. If there are minor problems, I really don’t care (unless you buy me a beer).

Known issues that will be noticed across all browsers mainly have to do with the forum. It’s just that the idea of integrating one CMS (WordPress) with another unrelated forum (FluxBB) is probably not the best idea, but since we started it last year or whenever, for now at least we will stick with this bandages and bubble gum approach. I’m going to be optimistic and hopeful that eventually a good WordPress forum will be built, but for now the options are either do this or using something like Drupal, which I don’t want to do, because I sort of hate Drupal (don’t tell anybody).

The only other option is Expression Engine (please don’t mention Joomla), but we can’t afford that, because this site doesn’t make any money! Like Scrooge McDuck, I insist that my hobbies are self-financing.

I do really prefer WordPress for blogging though, and thankfully it’s free, free, free…

So what was that about integrating the forum?

From now on, forum users will log in through the same login form used by the rest of the site. Once you log into the site, you will be logged into the forum as well. You can now comment on blog posts as well as make forum posts under the same username, without having to log in twice.

And yes, we have now a registration and login option for the whole site. Go ahead and register. Do it right now. You can come back and read the rest of this post when you’re done.

Now for those of you have already registered in the forum, your passwords are no longer any good. Sorry, that’s the way passwords work. They are encrypted and cannot be decrypted, and the bulletin board software and WordPress use different systems for encryption.

However, do not re-register. Your are in the system. It’s just that your password is no good. So all you need to do is go through the “I forgot my password” process or wait for an email from me with a temporary password that I have assigned you.

OK, so that’s the stuff that you need to know.

As for the rest, you can figure it out by exploring the site. Though at some point I will probably make a follow-up post to highlight what I think you should pay attention to.

Feel free to register (or do the forgotten password thing as I mentioned), and post your comments. Registration is not required, but it would be nice, and convenient for you too.

So…

DO YOU LIKE THE NEW SITE??

Amazing job! Nice integration of 3rd party content. The look and feel are great! Love the picture rotator on the front page. Impressive. Be nice to Drupal :D

Thanks, John! Glad you like the site.

It looks like so far you’re the only one that showed up today :)

Drupal is OK. I think I became annoyed with it when I was primarily using FireFox (loaded with plugins). It seems snappier with Chrome.

I’ll be your IE6 guinea pig (never bothered to update IE since I only use Firefox). All of the Google ads and the recent posts list line up evenly along the right side next to the blog posts in Firefox 3, but are shifted down in IE6. The first ad along the right side in IE6 does not appear until below the final blog entry. Oddly, this seems to only occur at http://elginite.org/blog/ and not on any other pages (individual blog entries, Elgin News, Events, etc.). But this is pretty much moot since IE6 is about to become two versions behind.

    Quite impressive, overall.

Thanks, Marty. I appreciate your taking the time to test the site in IE6. Darn, it’s too bad that page doesn’t work. I’ll put that on my TODO. Maybe by the time I get around to it though nobody will be using IE6 anymore…

I like it! One comment: about 10 posts showed up in the comment RSS, and the new comments have not showed up. Is there a new feed?

    • RS says:

Yep, unfortunately the feed address for both the regular feed and comments feed has changed. Grab it from the link in the sidebar.

  4. Wonderful job! I just found this site a few weeks ago, so I have the advantage of not being too used to the older format, but this is very together looking and easy to navigate. Great job!!

Love the new aerodynamic look! Excellent content, as always.

Thanks! Could this be the Tonya that has hitherto refused to leave a comment on this site?

Don’t worry, I won’t tell anybody you read The Elginite :)
