Mike Robins Advances

25 February 2009 RS 17 Comments

Mike Robins, our dog-loving underdog has edged out Charlene Sligting with a comfortable margin to advance to the general election. Turnout was less than 5%.

The Herald reports:

…Mike Warren, Emi Morales, Brenda Rodgers and Mike Robins - will advance to the April 7 election and one will emerge victorious.

With all precincts reporting in Kane and Cook counties, unofficial results show Warren was the top finisher with 693 votes, or about 31 percent of ballots cast…

Rounding out the field were: Morales with 503 votes; Rodgers with 347 votes; and Robins with 334 votes.

Charlene Sligting and Al Fernandez, with 280 and 105 votes, respectively, were eliminated.

The Courier reported slightly different numbers:

Results as of 10 p.m. indicated area businessman Michael Warren led all competitors with 722 votes in Kane and Cook counties combined, according to Kane County Clerk John Cunningham.

Attorney Emi Morales was in second with 533 total votes, former Elgin City Council member Brenda Rodgers was third with a total of 359, and former Civil Service Commissioner Michael Robins was in fourth place with total of 344.

Southwest Area Neighbors President Charlene Sligting was fifth with 292 votes, according to the tentative figures, while Hoffman Estates police Officer Al Fernandez finished sixth with 107 votes.

Democratic winners for Elgin Township Board:

Carol Rauschenberger
Deborah Willis
Ana Ortiz
William Becker

The city council election sends a reasonably clear message that the issue of illegal immigration is of concern to only a minority of Elgin voters. If the percentage of voters who are primarily concerned with illegal immigration is that low now, it will only deteriorate further as people continue to move out rather than try to put up what has become a losing fight.

Anti-illegals at this point seem increasingly like Elves on Middle Earth. Is it time to concede these shores and head for the Undying Lands?

Mr. Robins has some advantage in being able to differentiate himself from the other candidates–he alone is concerned about illegal immigration. But Mike Warren’s lead appears insurmountable. In order to win, Mr. Robins would need to pick up all of the voters who went for Charlene Sligting and Al Fernandez.

That is an impossible task.

  1. Paul says:

Robins only needs to pick up some of the 95% who didn’t bother to vote yesterday.
    Why is that impossible?

  2. Lifer says:

It’s still early and Robins has a good shot. He needs to continue to assert his stance in dealing with the people that are only making these tough times more difficult. Unfortunately, this has become an us against them race just like expected. As a a lifelong citizen, I’m sick of seing illegal aliens overcrowd the neighborhoods, schools and hospitals. I’m not alone in this. My only fear is the apathy of the citizenry. 5% voter turn out, how sad that we don’t take this right seriously. We as a collective whole will only have ourselves to blame. Community Activeness starts at the local level. You can’t get to Bozo bucket number six until you make Bozo bucket number one.

  6. RS says:

Paul, your point is valid, but I am skeptical that the makeup of the non-primary voter base is radically different than the primary voter base.

The April election will also have three incumbents, who have considerable advantages in the race. And voters who vote for any one of the incumbents are not only likely to vote for all the other incumbents, but also for one of the status quo candidates for the two-year seat, not Mike Robins.

  7. Boxcar says:

All I know is if I were an incumbent councilman, I would NOT show up. How in God’s great name can ANY of these 3 incumbents defend their records in the last 4 years? ESPECIALLY on illegals? The time for them to duck and dodge on THIS issue alone is over.

If we don’t get new people in here Elgin is doomed to becoming Carpentersville South. Mark my words. Tell me one city in this area that can stand to have more illegals?

    Elgin.

  8. JaneQPublic says:

Voter apathy is what led to the supporters of Warren and Morales to prevail! Count the total votes - only about 2100 people voted - pathetic!
I sincerely hope the balance of registered voters stand up to be counted on April 4th - Elgin DESPERATELY needs a change!

  9. Chance says:

No one running for council that supports or defends illegal immigration should be able to set on the Elgin city council. Everyone better be aware that if Emi Morales and Juan Figueroa get in office they will support illegal aliens living and working in Elgin. They could care less what negative effects this has on Elgin legal residents. Emi’s famous quote, when asked about overcrowded neighborhoods, which is a huge problem especially in older neighborhoods, she said, she would allow it she said we need to have compassion, these are poor people and will need to live together. Yah Emi, how about the legal residents that have watched as their home values plunge so your illegal’s can live2 and 3 families to a single home.

Mike Warren with Schock’s help spent a fortune to win the primary. He sent out 3 mailers had signs all over town. He will truly be a member of the Schock fraternity. He gets in and if no change is made in the current council than King Schock will rule for at least 2 more years. Than Elgin will really be lost. All the people that complain and never vote and sit home and expect someone else to do it better wake up. This election gives you a chance to change Elgin’s direction. Mike Robins, John Prigge and Richard Dunne will vote independently and will not be part of the Schock Block, Please get out and vote God knows we need change.

  10. Boxcar says:

Warren sent out THREE mailers??? If they were mass mailings, that tells me he is getting big-time bucks from Schock and/or SEIU. WOW! That’s hundreds of dollars.

We cannot take another Schock on this council. JEEZ! This city is worse than it was four years ago, that’s for sure. How can any incumbent defend their record now? Next Monday, we’ll see. This should be a comedy.

  11. Dannyblake says:

    Boxcar:

Again with the supposition. If you have questions about a candidate’s finances and actually desire the truth, please refer to the State Board of Elections website. I don’t see either Schock or SEIU mentioned under Warren’s list of contributors.

Is the dealing with the truth that far of a stretch?

  12. boxcar says:

Dannyblake: You may be right. This may be just what happens when a candidate aligns himself with a mayor who believes in bending over to let more illegal aliens ruin Elgin. It’s kind of a guilt-by-association thing, you know? Either Warren knows and doesn’t care or honestly thought that his string-puller, Ed Schock, would not put him under this type of scrutiny.

  13. JaneQPublic says:

Wait a minute - just because Juan Figueroa is a Latino, don’t assume he supports illegal immigration! He is from Puerto Rico, NOT Puerto Vallarta!

AND is 1 of only 2 current incumbents who EVER challenge Shock and have their own independent thought processes! He is the only incumbent currently running that I would vote for.

  14. Bigelow says:

If you want things to change, vote for someone different than is currently there. If you feel that the Schock Block policies aren’t supportive of Elgin’s ability to cope with the illegal population, then go out and find the independent thinkers who will brake up that iceberg we know as our city council. I only have experience with one, Dunne, but I support him all the way. The council needs someone who can see the end-game in their decisions, a vision that is currently lacking. He is that type of guy.

  15. Boxcar says:

Figueroa ABSOLUTELY DOES support illegal aliens infesting Elgin! When you hide behind the “It’s a Federal issue” skirt you are endorsing illegals.

Hiding isn’t helping, it’s promoting. Figueroa KNOWS his only existance is due to the sympathizers of illegal aliens. Hopefully, REAL citizens will outnumber those who feel allowing illegal activity to exist in their city is permissable.

I received a Mike Robins flyer. And as the flyer stated, he really did contact me within 3 days. We spoke for almost 1/2 an hour. He listened to all of my concerns for the city. i have lived in Elgin for almost 50 years. I have sadly watched my town go from a place where you would want to raise your kids, to a harbor town. Mike put me at ease when he told me ideas for this once great town. Balancing the city budget, and using our laws that are on the books to stop the criminal activity, are just the tip of the iceberg for this guy. I truly believe he can and will make our town safe and great again.
