Vote for Julie Schmitt

30 October 2008 RS 11 Comments

I want first to introduce you to Republican candidate Shirley Rauschenberger’s statement regarding her candidacy for the Kane County Board District 20 seat:

I believe, first and foremost, we need a property tax watchdog on the Kane County Board. Property taxes in our area are high already and we need to challenge all of our governments to live within their means. I will not support property tax increases. Instead, I will work for innovations, efficiencies and cost control for our county.

Secondly, county government provides many important services, and I want to challenge county staff to find affordable ways to make those services available on the Internet when possible, and locally (for example, at the Elgin City Hall or the Gail Borden Public Library) where affordable. People in Elgin should not lose a day of work traveling to Geneva for information or services that can be provided on the Web or close to home.

Thirdly, I see lots of wonderful families through out the 20th District, and homeowners who are working hard to make their houses into fine homes. To support this, I want to be an advocate for “pocket parks” in our neighborhoods, and urban forest preserves in our area. The Kane County Forest Preserve District owns thousands of acres west in Kane County, and before we buy any more park land in the west, I want properties like D.C. Cook and the former Santa’s Village considered for open space.

I will insist we review and judge new open space not just on price per acre, but also on how many residents can access and use the property.

I want to close by saying I consider it a privilege to run for this office, and I would like to earn your support. I promise you I will work hard and honestly for our area. I would appreciate your vote.

This is an admirable plank, and I respect Ms. Rauschenberger’s experience and contribution to public service over the years, but her advanced age (she is now an octagenarian), and the unlikelihood of a Republican victory in this district leads me to endorse Julie Schmitt. With enough votes from Democrats and Republicans, as well as Independents, she can win this election, and go on to serve us all as an independent voice on the Kane County Board.

Ms. Schmitt proved her chops when she fought tirelessly for open space in one of our overcrowded neighborhoods. Her commitment to that cause showed that she’s willing to go all the way for what she believes, and it showed that she can lead.

We need that sort of leadership on the Kane County Board, and we need somebody who can provide an independent voice. I don’t agree with the Green Party on most issues, but I know that Julie Schmitt will fight for open space, smart growth and accountable government. These are things that I believe in.

I was also heartened to hear Ms. Schmitt say at the League of Women Voters forum last week that she would be supportive of 287(g) program participation at the county level. This is an important program that helps local law enforcement officers cooperate with federal immigration authorities. The Democratic candidate in this race, Cristina Castro, said she would not support 287(g). Illegal immigration continues to be a serious issue in Kane County, and it is important that our elected representatives treat it as a serious issue.

If you have not already read Ms. Schmitt’s statement that was posted on this blog a week or so ago, I urge you to read her full statement.

Most of all, I will be a passionate and courageous advocate for our district. I choose Elgin eight years ago because I loved its architecture, its neighborhoods and its potential. As a member of an independent political party, I have no ties binding me to any archaic political ideology. I will standup and get the answers others parties don’t, and not support issues just to satisfy hidden party agendas. So I ask for your vote on November 4th to help me make a difference.

Let’s vote for Julie Schmitt and make a difference.

Julie Schmitt is one heck of a nutcase. She lost ALL credibility in her arguing with the City of Elgin concerning the Channing Street project. I witnessed her “woman on the verge of a nervous breakdown” performances at City Council meetings. She DOES NOT have the facts at hand and completely lost all control of her senses concerning this issue. Now she wants to run for county board or is she really wanting to run for City Council or is she wanting to run for state office? Are you a Republican or are you a Green Party member? All of her letters to the editor HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH HER RACE FOR COUNTY BOARD. At the Elpat/Lulac candidate’s forum, where she was challenged to defend her anti-Hispanic and anti-Immigrant responses to a Daily Herald article, SHE COMPLETED BACKTRACKED AND DID NOT ADMIT SHE GAVE THOSE ANSWERS. At the League of Women Voters candidate forum she NOW all of a sudden stated she was for 287g. MAKE UP YOUR MIND JULIE. If you can not take the heat in front of an audience that wants to hear the truth from you then maybe you should not be running for office. In her prepared statement, goofy Julie implied that we all should be concerned with the Fox River, our only true asset. She stated that “who knows what is being dumped into the river–oohh scary.” Julie, were you aware of The Fox River Water Reclamation District and their award-winning efforts in maintaining the healthy Fox River? Again, Julie Schmitt is a bone fide nutcase and I would rather vote for my pooch that vote for her for county board.

What the Heck! You admirably quote Shirley R and endorse Schmitt??? I’ve been to the forums; I know Shirley R. and believe me Julie is no Shirley!!! Julie is clueless and spineless, she takes a different position at each forum depending who she’s talking to. So how can she stand up and get the answers when she doesn’t understand the fundamentals of the issues?! But you speak well of one candidate but for vote for the lesser. Go Figure!

  3. John G. Dalton says:

I whole heartedly support Christina Castro for County Board. She will work hard to represent the voters in District 20. She has energy, enthusiasm, great ideas, has shown herself to be a tireless campaigner and is extremely well qualified. Christina is the obvious choice.

  4. I don’t know who SpeakingTheTruthElgin is, but their first sentence questions their integrity. One only lowers themselves by the language they use. Using that as a barometer, I think I will vote for Julie just because if she creates that much misguided passion from someone, she must actually be worth considering as a board member. The fact that she is neither a Democrat or Republican makes her just that much more attractive a choice.

  5. Pete Culver says:

Shirley R’s devotion to our community, should not be questioned by anyone that has been around Elgin enough and has any knowledge of her background in her time spent with Girlscouts and other projects. She is a jem and the community is lucky to have someone like her… We should be greatful for her accomplishments…..We wish her the best of luck..
At present we need someone that is hard working with the committment to serve with new ideas. I’ve grown to know Cristin Castro as someone that is hungry for a seat on the County Board and I think she will be someone that our District would be proud of. .I urge any Independant to contact Castro she will listen to your concerns….As far as 287(g) goes….. let’s leave undocumented workers to the feds.

SpeakingtheTruthElgin has a misunderstanding of the questions asked and answered by Julie Schmitt at the forums mentioned. The E.L.P.A.T. forum asked a general question about where the Kane County Board candidates stood on illegal immigrants. Schmitt responded that it was a complicated issue (which, of course, it is) and that “compassion” should be an integral part of any solution. The League of Women Voters’ forum question specifically asked if the candidates endorsed the Kane County Sheriff implementing the 287G program WHEN PROCESSING CRIMINALS. Julie responded that she does endorse the Sheriff utilizing that program in respect to those criminals– she only supports the 287G program FOR USE AGAINST CRIMINALS. Even Cristina Castro said she was against ICE at the county level unless a violent crime was involved. SpeakingtheTruthElgin apparently did not clearly understand the questions or he would realize Julie’s answers were NOT contradictory.

As to FRWRD, I have spoken with Julie several times and she has complete appreciation for what they do in regard to the Fox River water. Does that mean we should ignore any potential or future threats to the river? Does being concerned mean she’s saying she thinks nothing’s being done? She simply pointed out an important natural asset we have in Kane County and expressed her willingness to protect it.

And I agree with Mr. Komodo– can we not have an intelligent discussion without participants resorting to name-calling? I guess civility really is dead…

  7. Jessica says:

I visited Schmitt’s website and was turned off by her claim that a person can’t be a good politician without being a home owner first.

Also I’m surprised the ever compassionate and PC Green Party would support a candidate who is being ageist, implying one opponent is bad for the job because she’s too young and that the other is too old.

Just because I didn’t vote for her doesn’t mean we can’t be friends. I mean, one of her listed hobbies is biking!

  8. Patty says:

I agree with Jessica. It should not matter how old you are or whether or not you own a home. What should matter is that individual level of maturity and understanding of the issues affecting the district and county. As far as the 287g question, Katie must not have attended the same League of Women Voters forum that I was attending or just does not understand what 287g is.

287g for those of you who are unfamiliar is a program that trains local officers to enforce federal immigration law. Christina Castro stated, as well as candidates Don Wolfe, Jeanette Mihalec, that she was opposed to 287g training. Even sheriff Pat Perez is opposed to 287g. She never said she was opposed to ICE. She said she was opposed to having the county pay to have Kane County Sheriff police officers get 287g trained. She stated that any illegal immigrant who was convicted of a serious felony or crime should indeed be deported. It again sounds like Julie Schmitt doesn’t have a good grasp of the issues affecting the district or the county. Why would we want to put her in office? I personally don’t like flip-floppers, if they flip-flop on an issue how do you know they won’t continue to do so when elected?

As far as Julie Schmitt’s answers being contradictory, let’s let the blog readers be the judge:

Home ownership is an important factor when you are on the county board. When you are the one paying the taxes you have a healthy respect for what it feels like to shell out the money. And the Kane county board spends tax money.

I am the same age as Ms. Castro and zeal cannot equal experience. Management experience is very important at this time. Our money MUST be used wisely.

After Ms, Castro finishes her MBA and has a little managerial experience under her belt she will be more prepared.

  10. Alan says:

    To Pete Culver

Let’s get something straight, 287(g) is not about “undocumented workers”, it’s about illegal immigrants. A 12 year old kid cutting someones grass for 20 bucks cash is an undocumented worker. That is not who 287(g) is about, it is about people who are in this country illegally. Granted, many illegal immigrants are undocumented workers, but many are not. For many, the only work they do is work the system or make anchor babies, which I pay for with higher taxes.

I am so sick of hearing illegal immigrants referred to as undocumented workers. Do we call bank robbers unapproved loan recipients? Or house burglars uninvited house guests? How about car thieves, let’s call then unapproved vehicle renters. It’s time to stop with the politically correct BS and call them what they are. Illegal means illegal. It’s really not that complicated.

  11. rm says:

The only thing that’s “complicated” about the illegal alien issue is understanding where the money behind it from cheap labor and narcotics distribution is going. The Mexican government pursues a policy of dumping its poverty onto the backs of American taxpayers, and there are substantial American interests - “Republican” and “Democrat” - that promote, protect and benefit from this policy. Thanks to Mr. Dalton’s endorsement of Ms. Castro, we know of at least one more politician in this camp. It’s obvious that many local and regional political careers are being launched on the basis of the same demographic transformations that debase Elgin’s schools and sustain its narco-gangster environment.

The so-called “immigration” scandal is substantially less complicated than the Wall Street securitized derivatives mess, but the scandals are related in that they are both based upon greed and indifference to the welfare of ordinary Americans who have to pay the costs of these activities whether through deteriorating home prices, increased taxes or other burdens. As recent events in Elgin have shown, however, these costs are paid in both blood and money. If I recall him correctly, Mr. Dalton in his youth was once the beneficiary of an Elgin environment that educated kids. Now he promotes an environment that kills them. Unfortunately, tomorrow’s election results will likely show he is not alone.
