David Sedaris at Elgin Community College

October 3rd, 2008

I saw a poster at Caribou advertising an event at ECC on October 8th for David Sedaris, the author of several bestsellers including Me Talk Pretty One Day. This would not be newsworthy–er, blogworthy–except for the fact that they are actually charging $52 for the event.

I read over the poster several times in utter confusion. And there is nothing on there that indicates that this is anything other than a standard reading and book signing (to promote his latest book When You Are Engulfed in Flames), something which happens for free in any bookstore in any major city or even small cities. After all, it wasn’t that long ago that we attended such an event for Scott Turow at Town House Books in St. Charles.

So where do they get off charging $52? Have you ever heard of such a thing?

He came to Elgin last year and the price was the same. I guess it’s just supply and demand. I think it costs that much anywhere he goes.

Then I blame the demand side. Are you guys INSANE???

    lol

Nope. He came to Western Illinois, and I believe it was either free or no more than 20 bucks

Hm…I wonder if they made a profit. Sometimes schools organize events and help pay so they are cheaper for students.

I’d like to see Ira Glass at Hemmens, but those tickets are $40 and $50 unless you sit on the balcony, then it’s still $25. Yikes.

Evidently the Sedaris “brand” can command that kind of premium. I wouldn’t pay such money to see him, but I paid a similar amount to see Midori with the Elgin Symphony last weekend. I’m glad Elgin gives us such options and choices. On the other hand, if Sedaris is too rich for your blood please note that ECC is offering some pretty good deals on some significant musicians next year. Only twenty bucks to see bluesman John Hammond in January or harpman Howard Levy in February in an intimate “Club” setting. You can toss in a three-course meal from ECC’s Culinary Arts and Hospitality Institute for another $19.
