I found The Arboretum to be fascinating and visually appealing. The attention to detail in the storefronts and the streets (and sidewalks) are amazing. Plenty of good shopping and not just the kind you will find in every shopping center. I think this shopping complex is wonderful.

I forgot to mention that the Arboretum South Barrington does have an LL Bean, which is pretty cool. It's also sort of strange, because the tackle section is devoted almost exclusively to fly fishing, which is not a common form of fishing around here, though it's possible to do a day trip up to the Driftless Region. The fish tank is amusing when you compare it to the tank at Cabela's up the street...

Yeah, an actual arboretum around here would be really nice. Maybe that's in the future yet.

The shopping center Arboretum was sort of a disappointment. The 2700 trees and 30,000 shrubs and flowers did not stand out, so I guess that's the normal number of plants that would go into landscaping for a project of this size. The plants they selected were also disappointing. I think it would have been more appropriate for them to have used native plants, but there seemed to be no attempt at all to incorporate even a token amount of native plants.

Overall, I wasn't really impressed. I think the best-designed lifestyle center around here is the Deer Park Town Center. I just wish it was a little closer to Elgin...

Shoot, I was hoping it was an actual Arboretum, not a shopping center with a lot of trees.
