Some downtown Elgin news
Check out Jessica’s post on Walk & Roll. Here’s the video she shot:
It’s nice to see stuff like that happening in downtown Elgin, isn’t it?
Another nice thing to see happening in downtown Elgin is the emergence of a tech community. See Mike Sullivan’s article in the Elgin Courier News about Steve Munson’s plans for bringing techies together in Elgin.
Munson said he’s been mulling the possibility of bringing together downtown Elgin high-tech business owners to compare notes.
“For years I’ve been thinking we should get together and exchange ideas and get to know who the other tech/creative firms are and be able to build on that knowledge,” he said.
In fact, Munson said he hopes to schedule the first networking session in the next few weeks.
[Julie] Schmidt said Munson’s idea is a good one.
“It’s a great thing to get Elgin businesses together and find out where natural partnerships might evolve,” she said. Schmidt noted a certain firm may specialize in one particular aspect of technology, while another firm specializes in another.
“You can make a natural partnership that’s beneficial to you and businesses in the community,” Schmidt said.

Tech businesses are a natural fit for downtown Elgin. I think it’s a promising idea. Date and location for the first event will be posted here when I find out. Stay tuned.

I wonder if there is interest in a co-working space in Elgin?

If others would like to establish a coworking place in Elgin Let me know. I would love to set something like this up.

Thanks for sharing my video!
I saw that article in the Courier and thought about you immediately.
Tom, I think that’s a great idea. Ever since I’d heard of Jelly (http://wiki.workatjelly.com/), I’d been thinking the same thing, that something like that would be a good way to bring together freelancers, etc. The good news is that there are plenty of options now for locations. Elgin Public House has wireless Internet. Ravenheart Coffee has wi-fi. If you know of other places in downtown Elgin with free wi-fi, please add them to this list.
It looks like the Chicago Jelly is being held in someone’s house:

Jessica, thanks for the comment. Great video.
I look forward to the Elgin tech group too.! Let me know when plans mature for it.
Thanks for the comment, James. I’ll try to keep everyone posted.
I would be interested in learning more about a co-working space if I had my own freelance work or business. Maybe somewhere down the line that will come true. Anyone looking for engineering help on the side?
I enjoy reading about the pride and dedication that Elginites have towards the city. Keep up the good work Jessica!
Where’d you shoot that video? I don’t recognize much of anything (of course, it HAS been 14 years). Is that a new park, and, if so, what was on the property before?
