Elginite.org launches
February 17th, 2008I’m pleased to announce the launch of the new site. I’m sure you’ve already noticed that the whole site has been revamped. A new section is News, which bring in abstracts from the Elgin Courier News, the Daily Herald and the Chicago Tribune. It’s a nice starting place, I think, for getting your Elgin news fix. The home page also has the same links but without the abstracts. Photos from my Flickr account now show up on both the home page and the blog home page, and if you click on any of them they will expand in size. If you want to see more Elgin pictures in my Flickr account, just click the right-most image in the Flickr section of the sidebar on the blog home page.
The blog is now showing the archives going back to the earliest posts. I know the titles of the old posts are all numbers and the pictures are missing. That happened when we moved the blog from Blogger to a Wordpress installation. When I have time at some point, I’ll try to get the pictures in there and update the titles.
We’re only showing three comments at a time now in the blog sidebar, but if you want to see all the recent comments, just click on that orange RSS icon and your browser should display them all. You can also subscribe to blog posts, blog comment posts and forum posts using your preferred RSS feed reader.
The Events page displays events in the Elgin area. If you add your event to Upcoming.org, it will show up here and in the footer across the site. It’s a good way to promote your event, so I encourage you to use it.
So that’s it for now. There was stuff that I had started working on like pictures and classifieds, but I decided to leave them out until we have more users and people express interest in those features.
Let me know what you think of the new site. You can comment here or there’s also a thread in the forum.
Special thanks to Rich Miller.

Hi, great site! I just wonder who you are. You’ve written in the first person, but don’t sign your article anywhere. I’m just trying to figure out who’s blog this is. I’m guessing Steve Munson, but I could be way off base.
Anyway, good job. Nice to have all this info in one place!
Posted February 17th, 2008 at 11:50 pmThe site looks much nicer and seems to be easier to navigate. I wonder at calling it a “community website serving Elgin, Illinois” however as it seems to be the voice of one person with strong opinions.
