Triumph of Love
February 13th, 2008Elgin’s award-winning Janus Theatre presents Marivaux’s Triumph of Love this month, running through the 24th. It sounds like a nice post-Valentine show.
In this comic confection about love triumphing over reason, a princess adopts the dress and prerogatives of a man, invades the garden of a rationalist philosopher who despises love, and wins the prince of her dreams. Gender confusion leads to hilarious situations that ensue as the emotional stakes rise.
Janus Theatre’s Marivaux
This marks the third and final play in the Marivaux trilogy of love. The Janus Theatre performed The Game of Love and Chance in the summer of 2001 and Changes of Heart in the summer of 2003 - both productions received critical and public praise, and The Game won “Best Production of the Year” honors from the Pioneer Press. Janus Theatre also adapted Marivaux’ play The Dispute, renamed it Keep Your Eyes Open When You Kiss. They performed the piece at the London Fringe Theatre Festival in 2004 - winning “Most Popular Show” honors.SHOW ESSENTIALS: Triumph of Love by Marivaux
