*Elgin OPERA will present “L’Elisir D’Amore (Elixir of Love)” at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 9 and 3 p.m. Feb. 10 in Hemmens Cultural Cetner, 45 Symphony Way, Elgin. Tickets cost $40 main floor and $30 balcony. A gala with a pre-opera lecture, hors d’oeuvres, silent auction and a chance to meet the cast will precede each concert at 6 p.m. Feb. 9 and 1:30 p.m. Feb. 10. There is an additional $40 cost for the gala. The event is a fundraiser for Elgin OPERA, a not-for-profit organization. Call 847-931-5900 or visit http://www.hemmens.org .

*The United Way of Elgin will accept Request for Proposals until 4 p.m. March 7 for programs that address the following issues: getting kids ready to learn; helping kids stay in school to succeed; encouraging economically and emotionally stable individuals and families; and increasing residents’ involvement in their neighborhood’s well-being. Organizations submitting proposals must have an IRS 501 (c) 3 tax-exempt status; programs must address one of the target specifications; and the organization must be able to demonstrate the ability to implement and evaluate the program outcomes. *The Student Council of Kimball Middle School in Elgin recently collected more than 1,800 canned goods during a food drive to benefit the Community Crisis Center of Elgin.
