EHS story gets worse
Angel Facio, the teenage attacker of an Elgin High School teacher (and purported rapist of an 8-year-old), had just days prior to the EHS attack, tried to kidnap a 13-year-old girl. This only came to light because the Courier decided to print the name and picture of the attacker, which led to his being identified.
Sources said the attempted abduction took place near Larsen Middle School in Elgin at about 5 p.m. Jan. 16. At the time, the girl reported that someone had run up behind her and attempted to abduct her but that she was able to free herself and call for help. The would-be abductor fled, and Elgin police did an extensive search of the neighborhood, canvassing the area and knocking on doors in an unsuccessful attempt to locate witnesses. The girl was only able to provide a general description of the assailant.
The Courier News filed a Freedom of Information request seeking a copy of the police report on the attempted abduction. The request was denied by the city on several grounds, including that it involved a minor and an ongoing investigation.
But according to sources, detectives who learned of the Gilbert stabbing knew that the Jan. 16 attack was in the general vicinity of the Facio home on Jefferson Avenue. Additionally, sources said, the publication of the photo was crucial to the development of the case against Facio.
A photo lineup was conducted and Facio was identified as the assailant, sources said. (source: Elgin Courier News 1/26/08)
Nice job, Courier.
It makes you wonder about the competence of the Elgin Police Department, though. The attack was in the vicinity of the Facio home. The police department knew that Facio had six months earlier been implicated in the rape of a young girl, and they didn’t link the two. Disappointing, to say the least.
It looks like police chief Lisa Womack will have some explaining to do at the next council meeting.
