Candidates forum in brief

17 January 2008 RS No Comment

I attended the GOP candidates forum last night in Dundee, and it was very interesting. The candidates who attended were Jim Oberweis, Chris Lauzen, Jim Krenz, Jim MacRunnels, David Akemann and Patricia Golden. The Illinois House had been called into session, so Tim Schmitz and Ruth Munson did not make it to the forum. As for Kane County Board Chairman Karen McConnaughay, she apparently did not bother to respond to the four invitations that were sent to her.

I guess I will have more to say about the individual races and candidates in future posts, but briefly my impressions were:

- Pat Golden and David Akemann are similarly qualified for circuit court judge
- Jim Krenz is the better GOP candidate (Tim Schmitz does not deserve reelection)
- Jim MacRunnels is passionate but inexperienced, and campaigning on issues that are over and done with
- Chris Lauzen, for all the flack he has taken on this blog, may actually be the better GOP candidate for the 14th district

Chris Lauzen delivered the best quote of the night. After Oberweis delivered his gospel of free trade, ending with a statement about how he knows what it’s like in Detroit because he’s opening ice cream stores there, Chris Lauzen responded, saying, “‘Let them retrain’ sounds a lot like ‘Let them eat cake’…or ‘Let them eat ice cream…in one of our Detroit stores.’”

I was glad to pick up a Huckabee pin from Jon Zahm, a Mike Huckabee delegate.

Democrat Bill Foster must be very confident of his prospects in the primary, because he’s already sending cameramen to record public appearances of the GOP candidates. Oberweis also had a cameraman at the event.
