Ravenheart Coffee opens downtown

November 19th, 2007

Ravenheart Coffee opened for business today in downtown Elgin. I stopped by there this afternoon with Steve Munson of the DNA, after we had lunch at the Elgin Pub (mmm…love those burgers). We weren’t sure if the place was open, but we were standing around outside looking in and the owner, Jerri McCue of Algonquin, came out and said that in fact, she was minutes away from opening and that it was their first day.

She gave us a tour and everything. Unfortunately I had forgotten to bring my camera, so I can’t show you how nice it is, but they did a great job with it. The building is the one at the northwest corner of Chicago and Spring Street, next to the Low Line. They divided the space into two sections. The cafe is on one side and on the other is a salon, Salon Couture, which is owned by McCue’s niece, Nell Hughes.

Salon Couture just might be the nicest salon in Elgin, and if you need Aveda products, it looks like they carry the full line. In services, they offer pretty much everything, from haircuts to pedicures to massages and a spa treatment you won’t find anywhere else. Why? Well, you’ll have to see it for yourself. I’ll give you a clue: the building used to be a bank.

Hours for the salon are the same, I think, as for the cafe: 9 to 9 if I’m not mistaken. The cafe does have free wireless (Wi-Fi) Internet access.

Congratulations to Ms. Hughes and the McCues.

Oh I’m so thrilled it’s opened! I hope it’s good.

I was bummed when I saw them take off that 1960’s style awning from the building, until I saw that the salon was to be an Aveda salon. Then it made perfect sense.

Right now I get my hair done at the one in Dundee and I love it. It’ll be nice to have an alternative. I hope she hires just as fine stylists.

Will definitely have to stop in both places!

Hey! I noticed you put up a new post but no pics for this post. Let get a sneak preview.

Yeah I was a little bummed about the disappearance of the original signage, but I was so pleased with what they did on the inside, I didn’t even think to protest. They’ll be putting up an awning–I assume fabric, so we’ll see how it turns out. I think it should be pretty nice.

frankwolftown, maybe I’ll go back and take pics when they get their awning up!

NW corner? Is that where there was a small S & L back in the day?

  5. RS says:

That may have been before my day. Maybe someone else can help us out.
