Come to Elgin if you want to go to Harvard

16 November 2007 RS No Comment

That was the gist of an ad that ran in the Herald over the weekend. It was part of the city’s advertising campaign showing what kind of wonderful opportunities exist in Elgin. I saw no mention of Elgin High School in this ad, but it did mention Elgin Academy and the city’s other parochial and private schools of which there are a considerable number. For those families that can’t afford a private school education in Elgin, I thought I should mention some news that came out last week.

Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire, with an endowment that has swollen to a billion dollars, is now offering free tuition to families earning less than $75K.

Principal Tyler Tingley says in addition to a full scholarship and room and board, the school will cover books, supplies, other mandatory fees and a computer. (Source: Boston Globe 11/7/07)

The school is by reputation and by various measures, America’s leading preparatory school. As such, candidates must be competitive. If you know of any high school age younglings, refer them to the school’s website. Exeter admits students from grades 9-13. Yes, 13 looks a little strange, but they admit students who have already graduated from high school. These are known as PGs or post-graduates. They get a year to improve their qualifications for college, and at the same time help out the school’s football team.
