Will Kane’s 20th District go Green?

13 November 2007 RS 3 Comments

Channing Square activist Julie Schmitt has announced her candidacy as a Green Party candidate for the 20th District Kane County Board seat. I can’t remember any other Green Party candidate running for anything around here, so this will be interesting.

Three other candidates are vying to unseat incumbent Jesus de la Isla, who was appointed to the board last year to fill Marlena Fox’s vacancy. Zoning board member Cristina Castro is challenging de la Isla for the Democratic nomination. On the Republican side, Gail Borden Public Library Board trustee, perennial candidate and husband of County Recorder Sandy Wegman, Larry Wegman faces off against former city council candidate Richard Bennett. Mr. Bennett is known for his anti-illegal immigration stance.

The 20th District encompasses Elgin’s east side, and is one of twenty-six districts in Kane County.

  1. I currently reading BOSS the life Richard Daley. In the book it talks about how they made so hard to start a third party when it was so easy elsewhere. I guess this 60+ year paradigm is finally going to break.

  2. RS says:

Is it a good book? I’ve been meaning to read American Pharaoh, which is on my bookshelf. It’s also about Richard J. Daley.

  3. I’d say so. It really doesn’t pull any punches and it was written by a journalist who lived during this time so gives a lot of insight.
