City council wrap-up

October 10th, 2007

Unfortunately I missed the Committee of the Whole meeting, which had some interesting things on their agenda this evening:

  • a DOJ grant for surveillance and recording systems–what is that all about?
  • consideration of appeal for a denied permit to remove masonic symbols from the old masonic temple–an important landmark, now the Family Life Church
  • $250K $40K to Rodney Cavitt for facade improvements at 203-209 and 211-213 National Street in downtown Elgin, to be completed in 2008 for work already completed. City staff recommendation for additional $206K for improvements at 217-219 National Street for work to be done in 2008.

As for the regular meeting, a quiet day, not literally–there was a loud child running around, but not all that much on the agenda.

Presentations:

  • YWCA Youth Program was recognized for its role in the community, serving kids in the otherwise unsupervised hours after school gets out and before parents get home
  • U-46 Blue Stars, the U-46 Special Olympics team was recognized for its excellent performance at the state competition

Persons present:

  • John Loete, our Public Works man, described efforts to resolve the issue of flooding on Preston/Cooper Streets
  • John Collins back again to complain about flooding on Preston Street
  • Fox Valley Citizens for Peace & Justice representatives urged a resolution condemning the Iraq war
  • Dan Miller of the Gifford Park Association, though probably not speaking on its behalf, urged the city to modify the Channing Square development to reduce density. He wants the number of houses reduced to ten and the area of the park expanded
