It would have been a good idea for the city to have made this an online contest in the same way that the GBL did Storypalooza on YouTube. If it were an online contest hosted on Flickr, it would have promoted Flickr to Elginites and resulted in more Elgin-based Flickr users, and of course more pictures of Elgin in Flickr/online.
And it would have enhanced the city’s image as being technologically sophisticated. But most of all, it would have resulted in a lot more submissions to the contest. People have moved to digital photography, and asking them to print it out and mount it is asking too much. That’s why I didn’t bother with it, and I’m sure other people felt the same way. The contest itself is a great idea.
By the way, we are up to 16 members in our Elgin group, and 7 members in our Downtown Elgin group.
