Herald endorses Kaptain, Steffen, Powers

22 February 2007 RS No Comment

The thing about Michael Powers is that he reminds me of that saying, “64.8% of statistics are made up on the spot.” On the matter of Water Street place, for example, he told the Herald:

As far as the specific incentive package is concerned, it spurred a $66 million private investment and a positive net present value analysis by the city. The return is solid. Over 50 percent of these units are sold, even though the overall housing market is the slowest it has been in 15 years as it goes through a price adjustment. The rest will certainly sell. (source: Daily Herald 2/11/07)

What on Earth is he talking about? 50% of these units are sold?? This project was just approved in December, and according to the developer’s website it is still in the planning phase. If they’ve been secretly marketing and have sold half of these units, that would be nothing less than a miracle.

As for spurring a “$66 million private investment,” again, this is just wrong. The value of the whole project is $66M, of which amount the city is contributing almost a quarter. The developer’s own private investment will come in at about $51M.

We have enough people on the city council who can’t do math. I don’t see any reason to add another. As for Steffen, I can’t abide a candidate who would oppose 287(g) training. This is a program created and funded by the federal government. Obviously the federal government thinks that municipalities can use this training, and that municipalities have a role to play in enforcing immigration law. Why is it even controversial?

I support Kaptain in this race. Unfortunately coming up with a list of three candidates is rather tough. But if I had to do it, Vargas might be on that list. I don’t know who else.

Actually, the funny thing is that if you actually choose three people, and if you prefer one over the other two, your preferred candidate might actually lose because you picked those other two. So you’re probably better off just choosing one candidate, if you really do have a preference for that one candidate. This is one of the problems with the at-large system. One of the first things the new council should do is look into creating a ward system.
