Posted January 28th, 2007 at 10:21 amI really should know the answer to that question…It must be one of those books with a lot of pictures of what Elgin used to look like. Look at the Elgin shelf at the GBL. It’s near the reference desk. There are a lot of Elgin-related books and documentation there, and there should be at least a few books that have pictures like this one.
If you can’t find the shelf, ask the librarian. Good luck!
Posted January 28th, 2007 at 2:45 pmIf Elgin’s lost buildings are your interest, you all should check out the book There Used To Be: A Look Back At Elgin’s Architectural Heritage. The book recently was put together by Steve Stroud and published by the Elgin Area Historical Society. Copies should be available at Gail Borden or for purchase at the Society museum in the Elgin Academy’s former Old Main on Park Street. (Note, the museum is closed for updating in January and February, but will reopen in March with an architectural display among other exhibits.) Be sure to check out the website, too:thereusedtobe.org. By the way, Mr. Stroud is working on a second volume which, one hopes, will be available this year.

Posted January 31st, 2007 at 12:44 pmI picked up that book while in Elgin for the holidays. It is a lot of fun to look at the photographs of the old buildings. I corresponded with the author via his website a few months ago about a house I remember from my childhood (SW corner of McLean and Highland)
