Art museum vs. concert hall

December 11th, 2006

ICA, Boston

The Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston opened their new building yesterday. The cost was $41M. For that they got a 65,000 sqft building (including a 325-seat theater) designed by Diller + Scofidio, one of the leading firms of the day.

A contemporary art museum is in my view a much better bargain than a $125M concert hall for the ESO. More on that later.

My thinking exactly. I’m so depressed that no one stepped forward to save the former Gail Borden Library part of our public patrimony that in my view would have served us well as a museum.

Plently of parking, part of the civic campus, in a great location, and also from my estimation a premier example of the International Style of architecture.

Too young to be landmarked, it’s gone now. It wasn’t just a nice building, it really represented a significant period in architecture. I can’t believe we are taking public land for a private use.

I agree. It’s conceivable that in a short time, we will have destroyed all International Style architecture in downtown Elgin, perhaps Elgin generally.
