No trace of Unilever! and some sad news…

November 21st, 2006

I was driving down State Street yesterday and was amazed to find that the Unilever site is now a park! That’s right, grass and a sidewalk. Wow, that was fast! Good job, guys!

Unfortunately, I also noticed that demolition seems to have begun on the Civic Center’s Gail Borden Public Library building. I really don’t know what the rush is to destroy it. The Crocker was torn down and what replaced it? Piles of rubble. The developer has not budged and probably will never build the promised condominium. What makes the council think that the Water Street developers will actually build what they’re proposing? Take a look around. There’s something called a condo glut, and it’s not going away soon. Instead of tearing this building down, they should be suing the River Park Place developers or at least show them the stick (enough carrots already). If they’re not going to fulfill their promise, they should not be able to build in Elgin again.
