Yeah that was a stillborn dream.

Awesome building though. Now that the windows are cracked open I was able to see inside today. Great spaces. What a waste.

I don't think we can go directly from here to there without a lot of small steps in between. City leaders have a good record of supporting local initiatives like this, but the key word here is "support." In other words they do not do startups themselves. A local group would need to get the ball rolling and it will take a number of years to get to the point where a credible organization exists that would be able to run such an arts center.

A modest start is the best way to get things going and that means a a small group getting together to find a small space in the city--ideally downtown--that can be used to exhibit contemporary art. And it would have to grow from there.

Right now my business is in the Professional Builsing on Division St. We would love to have a more lofty type space to conduct our GREEN event planning boutique. Another amazing way to offset the costs of refurbishment is to when complete hold private and coorperate events in the main gallery. If you have an amazing backdrop thats not a hotel or banquet hall, people will rent the spaces. I.E. Feild Museum and Shedd Aquarium do the same and make a killing. This all in turn would feed local caterers, rental companies, printers, designer, florists, boutiques and bring outside people to Elgin to see it's rapid change. No one comes to Elgin anymore. People needs to seee what an artsy location it's becoming!

I love the idea for CACE. While some people may cringe at the thought of "artists" inhabiting Elgin, it would certainly help the struggling downtown businesses. A space for artists(visual, theatrical, musical, anything) to be able to live, practice, and show their art may be the best decision Elgin could make. If Chicago is "The Second City"(while I love the name, I personally think New York is just a dirtier and more expensive Chicago), Elgin could certainly become "The Third City." Artists already live in and love Elgin, why not try and expand on that?

Love the idea, now let's all figure out where to get the money!

I'd never thought about the carcinogens. That's good to know. I guess it will be pretty expensive to clean it up, but whatever project they do there, I don't think the cleanup can be avoided.

I worked at Simpson Electric in 1978!

IMHO, they would have to do some HEAVY mitigation of carcinogens. You could contract cancer just from walking in and taking a long, deep breath, what with all the Prop. 65 chemicals they used to use there!

Remember how much earth had to be removed from the old Elgin National Watch Factory site before Richard Gromer could build his "dream" supermarket? Same difference!
