For those not on the mailing list, Artspace just sent out a letter stating that the application submitted to the Illinois Housing Development Authority for tax credits was not awarded. It goes on to say Artspace and the City plan to reapply in January 2010 and that several of the existing projects were eventually awarded after an initial "no thank you." Stay tuned?

What ever happened to the ArtSpace plan? I'm on the mailing list and have heard nothing lately. Is the idea dead? I certainly hope not because as Mikey says, it would be a great addition to Elgin and would attract artists of all kinds. As a local dance instructor and troupe director, I know I'd make use of such a space!

From what I understand, Elgin was exploring the idea of converting an older building into rehearsal, performance, and living space for artists with a non-profit called Artspace.

Elgin is a town rich with artists, especially young artists who return from college. However, the draw of Chicago tends to keep some of these artists around for only a short period. If Elgin had more accessible performance and rehearsal spaces, young artists would not only be more apt to perform in Elgin, but also probably more likely to continue living here.

While there are great venues in Elgin(The Elgin Art Showcase, Elgin Academy Theatre, ECC's Theatres) they can be too expensive or may not have the same sort of flavor that all artists want. I love Elgin's support of the arts, and with any luck it will not only live on, but continue to grow.
