This article on Lao food appeared in today’s New York Times. It may be that Lao food is finally getting the attention it deserves.
If 3 Nagas were transported to New York, the lines would stretch out the door…Nothing we tasted reminded us of Thailand or of Vietnam.
There are few Lao restaurants in the United States. In fact, even New York City has no Lao restaurant. But Elgin has at least two restaurants that serve Lao dishes: White Pearl on Mclean, and Akina’s downtown. Give it a try.

I heard Akina’s is only so-so
Mmmmm.. .this article is making me salivate. I’ve tried Akina’s. It was pretty good. It has a nice ambiance, and is conveniently located. However, the udon noodles used in the chicken noodle soup (very different from the american chicken noodle soup) were a little overcooked. The freshly made noodles used at the White Pearl is usually firm and perfectly cooked, but the broth is a little thicker and occasionally on the sweet side. Maybe it’s the fried onions that garnish the soup that adds the sweetness. I’ve also tried their fried chicken, which was also sweet. The food was good once you get past the sweetness, though. They do make good Pad Thai, if you really want to go that way.
